Trumpeldor, Joseph
(1880-1920)
   A Zionist pioneer born in Russia, he settled in Palestine in 1912. He worked in Kibbutz De-gania and participated in the defense of nearby Jewish settlements. Trumpeldor helped to organize the Jewish Legion, which served with the British army in Palestine during World War I. He returned briefly to Russia in 1917 but then returned to Palestine in 1919. Trumpeldor died on 1 March 1920 while defending the northern settlement of Tel Hai against Arab attackers, and this action made him a legendary hero. The Revisionist youth movement and its sports organization are named after him—Betar (acronym for Brit Yosef Trumpeldor).
